Finding different spots to do work and study is so important, especially when sitting at the desk in your bedroom gets repetitive. Having a change in environment can actually help to increase retention! Personally, I like a little bit of background noise, but sometimes need silence, depending on my mood or what I’m working on. Here are my top study spots both on and off campus.
On Campus
1. University Undergrounds. I LOVE doing work in the Undergrounds. Especially because hours have been different for Bartle since the beginning of the fall semester. I actually found myself coming here more than Bartle this past semester because it has more convenient hours. It is open on the weekends, and is open later than the libraries on weekdays. I love the environment, the comfortable chairs, and it is thankfully located right underneath Dunkin’, when I need to grab an iced coffee (or two) to keep on the grind! The MarketPlace is also just a few steps away, so you stay close during your lunch or dinner break.
2. Bartle. I obviously have to include the main library on campus in this list! My favorite rooms to study include the graduate study room on the first floor, the North Reading Room (Or more commonly called among my nursing friends, “the White Room”) on the second floor, and the silent 4th floor. These are the rooms I study in when I need to do work alone. If I want to study with friends, I go to the South Study Lounge or grab a big circle table in the Arabic Room.
3. Science Library. I really enjoy studying in the Science Library. I primarily do work in the basement, since it has many desks and is free of distractions. The Science Library is also located very close to the Decker building, so I find myself here a lot. It is a great place to be especially during finals, because it is not as populated as Bartle.
4. Mountainview Success Center. When I lived on campus in Mountainview, I would spend a lot of my time studying in the Mountainview Success Center, located in the downstairs of Appalachian Dining Hall. On the weekends, I loved to grab breakfast and head downstairs to study most of the day. There were whiteboards readily available, which I felt was helpful when I needed to visualize my study materials on a larger scale.
5. Classroom Wing hallways. I love the egg chairs in the Classroom Wing! Some of my lecture classes junior year were located in the Classroom Wing, so I would get a few things done before class in these little nooks. It is mostly quiet, with people walking by occasionally, and has a lot of plugs and seating.
Off Campus
1. University Downtown Center. I live in a student housing complex just a few steps away from UDC, which makes it a very convenient study spot when I don’t feel like driving all the way to campus. It has a small library with seating and a few study rooms. Smaller than the bigger libraries and more common spots on campus, but still a great place to get things done if you live downtown.
2. Panera. Ever since I was in high school, I have loved studying at Panera. So when I came to college, I was excited to find that there was a Panera right down Vestal Parkway. I can spend all day in a booth with my friends studying, chatting, and ordering food and drinks to keep up my energy. It’s just a cool environment that is conducive to studying!
3. Strange Brew. It can be a little bit on the louder end in my experience, but a very cute place to do some work downtown. There are a lot of options for coffee, so it’s great to get your caffeine fix, while taking in a classic cafe environment.
Hopefully at least one of these study spots is a good fit for you to absorb all of your study materials, or get some busy work out of the way!
