My name is Abbie, and over winter break, I had the opportunity to attend an NYC Connect Employer Trek at NYU Langone Long Island, and it was an incredibly informative experience. As a senior nursing student and student ambassador for the Decker School of Nursing, I was excited to learn about the hospital’s nurse residency program, professional development opportunities, and career advancement pathways.

    Key Insights from Nursing Leaders

Throughout the day, we heard from various nurse leaders, recruiters, and Decker graduates now working at NYU Langone. Some of the highlights included:

    • Nurse Residency & Professional Development Programs – Designed to help new grads transition smoothly into nursing practice while providing opportunities for growth, mentorship, and specialization.

    • Career Flexibility & Tuition Reimbursement – NYU Langone offers generous tuition reimbursement to support nurses looking to further their education and career.

    • Magnet Nursing Culture – A strong emphasis on nurse autonomy, research, and practice improvement, which empowers nurses to be leaders in patient care.

    • Interview Tips & Management Styles – We learned about different leadership approaches and strategies for success in job interviews.

    Memorable Takeaways

One quote that truly resonated with me came from the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department, who said:

"Before you leave any role, be a master in that role." This advice emphasized the importance of building strong clinical skills before moving on to new positions. She also introduced us to the Nursing Professional Advancement Program, which helps nurses grow within their roles using evidence-based practice.

We also had the chance to hear from Decker graduates who now work at NYU Langone. They shared their career journeys and spoke about how the hospital has supported them, reinforcing the strong Decker-to-NYU connection.

    Opportunities for Nursing Students

Cathy Barach, an NYU nurse recruiter, along with other recruiters, shared details on:

    • Externships for juniors, offering hands-on learning experiences.

    • Residency programs for new grads, helping to ease the transition from student to professional nurse.

    • Networking tips, including how to connect with NYU Langone’s recruiters and leadership.

    • Nursing salaries and benefits, giving us a real-world look at compensation and career growth.

    Final Thoughts

NYU Langone Long Island is clearly dedicated to supporting and investing in its nurses, making it a great option for students looking for a residency program or long-term career growth. Whether you’re a junior looking for an externship or a senior exploring new grad opportunities, this hospital offers incredible resources to help you succeed.

I highly recommend looking into NYU Langone Long Island if you’re considering a career in nursing!
