My name is Abbie, and over winter break, I had the opportunity to attend another NYC Connect Employer Trek, this time at Long Island Community Hospital (LICH). As a senior nursing student and student ambassador for the Decker School of Nursing, I was eager to learn more about the hospital’s externship, fellowship, and residency programs—and bring back key insights for my fellow nursing students.
Meeting with Nursing Leaders
During our visit, we had the chance to hear from several leaders in nursing and patient care, including:
The Director of Patient Experience, who highlighted the hospital’s commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
Senior Nursing Directors from the ED, Stroke, and ICU, who shared details about their high-acuity units and the importance of teamwork in these fast-paced environments.
Nursing Educators, who spoke about professional development and opportunities for students and new grads.
Career & Learning Opportunities
LICH offers a variety of programs to support nursing students and new graduates, including:
Externships for juniors, providing hands-on experience to help students build confidence and clinical skills.
Residency programs for new grads, offering structured learning and mentorship to ease the transition into professional practice.
Fellowships, providing specialized training in different units for nurses looking to advance their expertise.
Touring the Hospital
We had the opportunity to tour the entire community hospital, including the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, which is dedicated to advanced cardiac care and treatment. The hospital's commitment to innovation and patient care was evident throughout our visit.
