Hi! My name is Kate and I'm a junior in the traditional nursing program and the vice president of the Mary E. Mahoney (MEM) Nursing Support Group. What makes MEM unique is that it is the only multicultural nursing organization on campus. It serves as a safe haven and resource center for underrepresented minority nursing students and prospective nursing students. Our goal is to be a support system and an inclusive environment where students are able to build a community and meet other nursing students.
MEM hosts many events such as our annual Alumni Brunch in September where students are able to listen to Decker Alumni speak about their experiences and make meaningful connections. We also have informational sessions that provide information and advice about the Intra University Transfer process and applying for externships. Along with our academic events, we host a variety of non-academic events including apple picking, roller skating, and pumpkin painting to destress and make new friends.
We host a Mentorship program each year where students are paired with either a MEMtee or MEMtor. Mentors (upperclassman) give guidance, advice, and support to mentees (underclassman). We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to get involved with the community such as the Campus Pre-School Center, where students are able to volunteer at the preschool and gain experience working with children from 18 months to 5 years old. This is offered semesterly and volunteers will recieve a certification of their completed volunteer hours. There are also one-time volunteering opportunities such as making cards for elderly homes.
