Working a 12-hour nursing shift can be tough, but having the right habits can make it much more manageable. It is important to set a plan and be organized before starting your shift. With smart planning, self-care, and good habits you can stay energized and focused throughout your toughest days.

Here are some simple, yet effective tips to help you get through a 12 hour shift…

    Before your shift:

    1. Hydrate and fuel your body: packing balanced meals and snacks to fuel yourself is key

    2. Wear the right gear: wear comfortable scrubs, shoes and make sure you pack all of your supplies in order to make for a great shift

    3. Start the day with a positive attitude: staying positive will give you the mental strength to get  through the long day

    During your shift:

    1. Mentally space the day out: breaking the day apart will help you find balance and not be overwhelmed with all that needs to be accomplished

    2. Stay organized: it is crucial to prioritize tasks as well as cluster them together in order to work as efficiently as a possible

    3. Preserve your energy: using appropriate body mechanics can prevent overexertion or injury

    4. Work as a team: lean on your team to accomplish tasks you may find difficult in order to get the job done safely and efficiently

    After your shift:

    1. Decompress: it is best to wind down after a long shift by taking a moment to yourself, being productive with tasks in your personal life, and relaxing after you have made it through the last 12 hours. Open a good book, listen to some music or even take the time to lay in a quiet space as well as trying to avoid doom scrolling on your phone which only tires your brain more.

    2. Prioritize sleep: focusing on getting a good night's sleep is essential to rest your body and make sure that you are prepared to take on what the next day may bring.

It is so important to take care of yourself because after all how can you prioritize patient care if you aren’t fueled and focused!
