Welcome to New York ( Decker's Version)

Kaavya

As employer treks begin to come to an end and the beginning of the semester approaches, I want to take a moment and reflect on Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill employer trek. Our session was filled with both Decker seniors and juniors and began with a tour of the units that were of interest to the students. As we walked through the halls, it was clear that this hospital was a very tight knit community and almost everyone knew one another. We were able to witness rounds take place where the entire care team was present and all offered valuable insight into a patient’s care.

Following the tour, a panel of Decker alumni, of varying years of practice shared their experiences working in Lenox Hill. A common theme among these alumni was their ambition and leadership skills. Most of the nurses on the panel were in leadership and management positions and were able to achieve growth in their careers with the support of their colleagues and the encouragement of the hospital. A quick information session was also shared with us about Lenox Hill’s Nurse Residency Program and their Fellowship Programs, both of which are programs to help support a nurse’s transition from a new grad nurse into their first year of practice. We were also lucky enough to hear from the Chief Nursing Officer who shared some words of wisdom with us when it came to choosing where to start our career and praised us for our decision to enter such an arduous, yet rewarding career. Additionally, we heard from human resources and they detailed many of the benefits we would get from choosing to work at Lenox Hill. These benefits included: tuition reimbursement, health insurance, and a retirement plan!

As many of us begin to look into where we want to work or apply for summer externships, attending these employer treks were very valuable in hearing about a hospital's value and how they support their nurses. I highly recommend attending any future sessions for any students who are reading this post and keep an eye out for upcoming employer events! See you all back in the classroom!
