My name is Abbie, and over winter break, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an NYC Connect Employer Trek at Northwell South Shore University Hospital. As a senior nursing student and student ambassador for the Decker School of Nursing, I was eager to explore what this hospital had to offer and bring back valuable insights for fellow nursing students.

    Meeting with Nurse Educators

During our visit, we met with the director of nurse education and two nurse educators, who provided a comprehensive overview of the hospital’s nursing programs and opportunities. They spoke about:

    • South Shore as a Level 1 Trauma Center and Level 2 NICU, making it a dynamic and high-acuity environment for nurses.

    • A brand-new L&D unit, pediatric unit, and ORs—exciting additions to an already impressive facility.

    • Externships, new graduate programs, and professional development opportunities, giving students and new nurses a strong foundation to start their careers.

    • Tips for new grads on interviewing, adjusting to the profession, and standing out as candidates.

    Hospital Tour

We had the chance to tour various units, including the ER, OR, Pediatrics, Med/Surg, Neuro, ICU, SICU, NICU, and L&D. The hospital is absolutely stunning—most of it has been redesigned in the last seven years, and with ongoing construction, even more ICUs, ORs, and expanded spaces are coming soon.

    Key Takeaways for Nursing Students

    • If you’re a senior: Consider South Shore for new grad programs—the hospital is growing, and they’re actively looking for nurses to join their team.

    • For underclassmen: Look into externships to gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art facility.

    • For everyone: The nurse educators emphasized the importance of preparing for interviews, asking questions, and being open to different specialties as you start your career.

Overall, this experience was an eye-opener to the incredible opportunities available at Northwell South Shore University Hospital. Whether you’re exploring externships, searching for a job post-grad, or just curious about different hospital environments, I highly recommend attending an employer trek like this!
