If you’re anything like me, you often come home after a long day of class wanting nothing more than to sit on the couch eating popcorn and watching the Great British Bake Off for the foreseeable future. While both of those things are important, I’ve found (through trial and error) that incorporating exercise into my daily/ weekly routine helps me feel my best.
Staying “in shape” is, and should be, different for everyone. We’re all unique, have different goals, and most importantly we enjoy different things. My advice is to find something that makes you happy; that you can look forward to! When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, consider that activity to help you unwind. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking:
Join a club sport! Luckily, Binghamton University has an extensive club sports program. With over 40 clubs at varying competitive levels, there’s something for everyone. In addition to the physical benefits of joining a club sport (endorphin release, reduced risk of chronic diseases, etc.) it provides a great way to make friends and integrate a social activity into your busy schedule.
Join a gym!
Planet Fitness ~a great option for those who are just starting out. Memberships are very affordable, and the gym has a “no intimidation” policy.
Campus Gym ~ convenient for before or after classes and for anyone living on campus, with great facilities and access to fitness classes!
Explore the Nature Preserve!
Go on a walk or run! ~ This is particularly relevant for those living off campus. I find listening to music, a podcast, or an audiobook while walking/ running to be really relaxing. It also gives you the opportunity to explore parts of Binghamton you might not otherwise see!
No matter what you choose, moving your body in some way will help you feel more balanced, focus more easily, and feel happier on a day to day basis.
