NYC Connect at NYU Long Island!

Hi everyone! My name is Emily Reichelscheimer, I'm a senior nursing student in Decker and like many other seniors, I've started thinking about employment post-graduation. Decker has worked tirelessly to put together another successful year of NYC Connect Employer Treks, giving students the valuable opportunity to meet healthcare employers in the region. I had the chance to embark on a Trek at NYU Langone Hospital Long Island, where I learned about externship and post-grad nursing opportunities, heard from Decker alumni and the NYU hiring team, and toured some of NYU's facility.

We began our day with an information session at NYU's Research and Academic Center, where we were met by Cathy Barach and her Talent Acquisition team. During this session, we received valuable information on the externship and nursing application process, as well as insight into how new graduates transition into practice with their accredited nurse residency program.

After we were given the opportunity to pick the Talent Acquisition team's brains for application tips, we heard from Christie, a recent Decker graduate, and her manager on the Surgical ICU. Christie reflected on her experience as a new graduate nurse, and spoke about how NYU has supported her throughout this process. Speaking with a Binghamton graduate added another layer of relatability, and hearing her speak so highly about her experience was very reassuring to those of us nervous for the transition.

Following this information session, we were led into the hospital to take a tour of the Surgical ICU. Seeing even a portion of the facility, it was evident that the floor staff form a family, and that patient care is truly a priority. We were also able to see a unit that was dedicated solely to the care of open-heart surgery patients, demonstrating proficiency in the care of those acute patients.

This Trek was such a wonderful opportunity to learn about NYU as an employer, and I am so thankful that Decker offers the NYC Connect program to help expose students to different healthcare systems. I would highly recommend every student to consider the NYC Connect Employer Treks, whether they are a junior interested in externships, a senior exploring employment options, or simply a student interested in learning more about options in their area.
