Nursing school is BUSY. It seems like the exams never end, you're always working on a paper or presentation, and you're frantically practicing your nursing skills before your next sign off. The demands of nursing school can easily consume you and make it feel like you have time for absolutely nothing.
However, it is important to get involved in extracurriculars! They're a good way to meet new people while also taking a mental break from school. Personally, I am Vice President of our nursing student-ran support group here on campus, and also have two jobs. Juggling it all can be overwhelming at times, but I have determined that the single best way to be able to fit everything in my schedule is organization. I have tried many different methods of organization in the past, but nothing has worked better for me than keeping an updated Google Calendar and to do list.
I keep upcoming assignments, tests, events, work shifts, and appointments on my calendar. Then, I keep a daily to do list in the notes app of my phone. I write out each day of the week and put the tasks I need to complete each day underneath them. This helps me visualize my entire week. I like keeping everything on my phone because everything is at my fingertips. If a friend/colleague is asking about my availability on a certain day, I have the answer for them right there on my phone. I know that if I had a physical planner, I would likely leave it at home a lot, which would definitely affect my level of organization. Some people prefer to have a planner though, which is great. Whatever will allow you to be as organized as possible is the best option for you.
So, it is absolutely possible to find a balance between nursing school and extracurriculars. Everything lies in sound organization and time management skills. Also, don't slack on the self-care while trying to find your balance!
