New York Presbyterian Information Session Experience

Updated: Jan 19

As we approach the end of our time here at Decker, many questions come up. You may ask yourself, "What hospital do I see myself working at? How far do I want to commute? What specialty do I want to start in?". You're not alone! Nursing students all around the country are asking themselves the same questions and so are your peers.

Decker does a great job of allowing students to access different opportunities when it comes to residency and externship search. One of the opportunities was this January, Decker coordinated multiple in person information sessions with different hospitals including New York Presbyterian.

My experience at New York Presbyterian was extremely fascinating given that we learned about all the different opportunities the facility has to offer. Among 11 different NYP facilities, multiple have a Magnet designation. There are opportunities for Nurses to be in research committees, shared governments, and even research. These few points alone caught my eye and made me excited for the future.

During the information session, NYP emphasized the importance of mental health at the facilities and the resources that are provided to make sure all your mental health struggles have a solution. There are well-being coaches and recruitment teams available to make sure your transition from student to nurse is done seamlessly.

When it comes to being a new graduate, there are early match programs available so that new grads do not feel invisible and to be in contact with peers who are experiencing the same thing. As far as juniors who are doing externship searches NYP does not provide this but instead has nursing companion positions.

As you begin your journey on where you want to begin as a nurse remember the support system you have here at Decker and believe in yourself!
