Although we do not go into this profession for monetary gain, it's still nice to be able to make some money! Since inpatient nurses typically work 3 days a week, many opt to pick up a second job or a "side hustle" to bring in some extra cash. There are many opportunities for nurses who are looking to do this. Some nurses even realize that they enjoy these jobs more than their inpatient job, and choose to pursue them full time! Here are some of them:
Immunization Nursing: Immunization nurses can work in a variety of settings, such as outpatient clinics, drive-through clinics, or do home visits. You can pick up an immunization gig part time or on a per diem/"as needed" basis. With the increasing demand for COVID-19 vaccination, there are more opportunities than ever for immunization nurses!
Telehealth Nursing: Telehealth nurses use telecommunication (video call, phone call, email, and/or messaging) to deliver high-quality, individual care to patients remotely. Telehealth nurses typically evaluate patients who are experiencing minor health issues and instruct patients on when to seek additional medical help. They can even verbally assist patients with self-treating small ailments, such as dressing a wound or treating a minor burn. Telehealth nurses typically practice from their homes, but can practice from a wide variety of healthcare settings.
Outpatient Nursing: Outpatient nurses work in a wide variety of settings, since basically anywhere that is not the hospital is considered outpatient. Most commonly, outpatient nurses work in primary care or specialty care offices. Nurses in these settings can expect to work very closely with the provider and other members of the healthcare team to deliver individualized care to patients. Usually, outpatient settings have a much quicker turnover rate than hospitals, so you can expect to see more patients than you would at an inpatient setting. However, you will likely be working with one patient at a time, rather than multiple patients, as you would in the hospital setting.
Cosmetic Nursing: Cosmetic nurses, also known as aesthetic nurses, are registered nurses with specialized training in cosmetic services. These nurses can provide their clients with services such as injectable fillers, laser skin treatments, liposuction, tattoo removal, amongst other things. Cosmetic nurses typically work in medical spas and clinics.
These are just four of the many opportunities nurses have to make some extra money. One of the best things about this profession is how flexible it is! With the right mindset and work ethic, nursing can truly be a lucrative profession, all the while making a positive impact in others' lives!
