The ISPC, or Innovative Simulation and Practice Center, is one of the most crucial learning experiences within your time at Decker. The ISPC is home to state-of-the-art technology to simulate practice experiences before going into the real world.
To succeed in the ISPC, you must:
Come prepared- The ISPC is made for hands-on practice time. If you don't know what you are doing coming into the ISPC, it makes it a lot harder to focus on practicing the skill. Read up and watch lab videos about the skill beforehand, so that when you get to the ISPC you are ready to dive right in to practicing.
Go to open lab hours- Open lab hours are one of the best things about the ISPC. Many times, scheduled labs are not enough time to truly get comfortable with a skill. However, the ISPC always has open lab hours for students to come in and practice their skills in their free time. Student workers are always there to help out during the hours as well!
Be receptive to criticism and making mistakes- Making mistakes and learning from them is what the ISPC is all about! This facility allows you to become more comfortable with new technology and learning the foundation of nursing skills without the fear of harming a real patient. Remediation and practice is the best way to succeed, so don't feel discouraged if something takes you a few tries to perfect.
Below are the different parts of the ISPC and how they can help you within your time at Decker!
Different parts of the ISPC:
Simulation Wing
"The hospital-based simulation suite includes a nurse’s station and 3 patient care areas that can be adapted to represent any hospital environment: from ER to OR, from NICU to CCU. Our high fidelity manikins represent diverse backgrounds and ages."
Home Care and Life Skills Suite
"The home care and life skills suites represent an apartment, kitchen, and laundry areas to allow for practicing care in patient homes."
Learning Lab
"The learning lab is equipped with a central teaching area with teaching technology and 18 hospital style bays. The large classroom can be divided to support 2 smaller, simultaneous classes."
Practice Rooms
"The deliberate practice area is designed for teaching and practice of skills for a wide range of healthcare professions. Four practice beds with headwalls and counter-height tables provide flexible areas for a variety of activities. Large screens allow for projecting skills demonstrations or reviewing training videos.
The skills practice room supports independent student practice with badge access any time the building is open. Practice with a student mentor is available by appointment six days a week during the fall and spring semesters. The area has four practice beds with headwalls and counter-height tables, similar to the deliberate practice area."
Innovative Instruction (Exam) Rooms
"The innovative instruction rooms are set up mainly as exam rooms. However, all furniture is movable to provide flexible functionality. With a variety of healthcare programs and increasing virtual-reality simulation opportunities, the innovative instruction rooms can meet the needs of our students now and in the future. These rooms also support video recording for competency-based activities."
