Flora
The Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences has relocated from Binghamton University's main campus to a beautiful and historic building that once was the Endicott Johnson Shoe Corp. Pioneer Annex - a shoe and shoe box factory. When you arrive, you will be greeted by this amazing structure...
which once was...
Inside the building
First Floor
When you walk right into the building, you will see a brightly lit and spacious atrium. The inside of this facility was completely cleaned out and renovated to provide the us with clean and modern touches with a few features of the original building to pay homage to what it once served as - a shoe factory.
On the first floor you will find a large multipurpose room which hold 200s seats, be converted into two separate rooms, or serve as an event space. This is where most of our junior and senior lecture classes take place, so be ready to get comfy in this room. This floor also houses the faculty advising suite, Starbucks food court, lactation room, quiet library space, study rooms, lounge area, student organization rooms, and the IT help desk. Between classes, you will often find students studying, eating, and sometimes relaxing in the lounge, food court, or study rooms.
Second Floor
The eye catcher of our building is definitely the Innovative Simulation and Practice Center (ISPC) which almost covers the whole floor. Here you will be having clinical labs and practicing skills in the 18 bed teaching-lab which is set up the way a hospital would be as well as a nursing skills lab. There are also 8 innovative instruction rooms that serve as physical exam rooms, which might look more familiar to you. You will also find a nurses station with medication dispensary, home care suite to resemble a long term care environment, and 3 hospital simulation rooms.
If you would like to practice or review assessments or skills that you learned in lab, you can sign up for open lab to master those skills with the help of a knowledgeable nursing student or staff member. Decker wants to see you succeed so don't be afraid to use the resources that are available to you!
You might also see Vivian who is our surprisingly life-like elderly female mannequin, who you can spy in the lower right of the image above.
Third Floor
As you take the elevator up to the third floor, you will see a fabulous view of Johnson city right through the glass of the elevator. Here you will find several smaller classrooms, conference rooms, offices of faculty, office space for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, clinical placement and adjunct faculty members.
Fourth Floor
The fourth floor consists of offices and conference rooms for nursing and public health.
Fifth Floor
On the fifth floor, we have the occupational therapy and speech and language pathology classrooms, offices and laboratories. In addition, you might see some 3rd or 4th year medical students from SUNY Upstate Medical University who occupy a portion of this floor for their clinical practice.
Sixth Floor
Last but not least, the sixth floor houses the physical therapy division which is currently still under development and hopes to have their first cohort of students by 2024!
