One of the many great things here at Binghamton University is that there are many different options for those who choose to pursue a minor. Finding the right minor is a great compliment to your BSN and can be the perfect addition to an already great resume!
When you are admitted to Decker if you have already taken certain prerequisite courses you may find that you have free time to take more courses, especially during your first two years. Adding a minor is the perfect way to stay involved on campus and to learn more about a field you are interested in.
The Decker School of Nursing and Health Sciences currently offers two minors: Forensic Health and Health and Wellness Studies. We are also very proud to announce our brand new Speech and Hearing Science minor that will begin to be offered in the fall. This minor is made up of six courses and requires 24 credits. The first course SLP 414 Introduction to Communication Disorders will be offered in the summer with the rest of the courses being offered during the 2021-2022 academic year. This program allows students to take all of these courses and will allow students to complete requirements to apply for a graduate program in Speech Language Pathology if they are interested.
The Forensic Health Minor uses the science and application of health science and applies it towards legal issues. This minor requires 24 credit hours with 16 credits of core coursework and 8 credits consisting of adjunct coursework. Some examples of coursework offered are Forensic Pediatrics, Correctional Health and Medicolegal Death Investigation. To apply for this minor students must have at least 60 completed college-level credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Applications are reviewed for both the Spring and Fall semesters. Applications are due by March 15 for fall enrollment, and October 15 for spring enrollment. Applicants will receive a decision within 30 days of application due date.
On the other hand, the Health and Wellness Minor entails a variety of knowledge in many different areas and uses information to teach students to effectively assess, plan, motivate, and implement health-promoting behaviors and cultivate lifelong wellness to diverse populations. This minor consists of four core courses: Nutrition, Science and Application of Exercise, Stress Management, and Contemporary Health Issues - 14 credits total. This minor also allows for 10 credits worth of Health and Wellness elective courses which allows students to take courses such as: Karate, Scuba, Physical Fitness and Wellness, and even Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries. These elective credits allow students to choose areas of interest and take classes that suit those interests. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA is required and the application is rolling admission.
There are also plenty of minors that can be taken instead of the two Decker School of Nursing Minors. Popular minors for nursing students that are offered at Binghamton University include sociology and Spanish. These minors allow you to chose an area of study you are interested in other than nursing, but can also benefit your learning in many different ways. Another popular minor is the Global Studies minor. Students who choose to study abroad can take this minor and work on courses before, during, and after they study abroad.
Some students even choose to Double Major as an alternative to adding on a minor! For example Psychology is a very popular field of study but there is not a psychology minor offered. Students may choose to double major as a way to further increase their education in Psychology and simultaneously complete their Nursing Degree.
Overall, Binghamton University has many different ways to expand your education to find another passion along with your nursing degree. Choosing to pursue a minor is a great way to take courses that you are interested in and to boost your resume. As a Health and Wellness Minor I can say that choosing to pursue a Minor was one of the best decisions that I have made during my time here.
