NYC Connect: NYU Langone

Jess

In collaboration with Decker Advising, I recently had the opportunity to attend an information session about the NYU Langone Hospital system through NYC Connect. Throughout the session, I learned more about the hospital, its accolades, the significance of the nursing residency program for new graduates, externship opportunities for rising seniors, and insights from Decker alumni.

The NYU Langone hospital system comprises five hospitals with locations in Brooklyn, Long Island, and Manhattan. This hospital system also has a vast network of ambulatory centers in addition to being renowned number one in outcomes, earning an A+ in Leapfrog ratings, and consistently securing high positions on World Report. NYU Langone holds Magnet recognition for 4 consecutive years and is currently in pursuit of a fifth title. This distinction is achieved by less than 1% of the 6,000 hospitals in the US emphasizing the hospital's commitment to excellence.

New Graduate Nurse Residency Program

NYU Langone hosts a year long nurse residency program that all new graduate nurses are automatically enrolled in. This program, a recommendation of Magnet certification, emphasizes a transition from academia to clinical practice by building confidence with an emphasis on developing strong leadership skills based on the principles of psychological capital. The residency program is started after a new graduate undergoes their unit orientation and occurs in conjunction with assigned unit shifts. All NYU Langone new graduate nurses undergo residency unlike other hospital systems in which there are limited residency spots available. Nurses enrolled in this program meet quarterly in addition to having independent modules. This program is distinctly different from orientation as it provides one to two opportunities to shadow other units, virtual reality simulations and research based projects. NYU Langone’s residency program is accredited by the commission on collegiate nursing education, they are the only NYC based program in which all of their hospitals are accredited. This program was the second program accredited nationally and administration works to continuously update residency to reflect modern nursing practice. The residency program does not provide in house additional certificates such as the PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification however, these opportunities are supported through advanced skills training. NYU Langone has a program called success pays which allows one to take certification tests at a discounted rate, if you do not pass the certification on your first attempt this program allows you to retake the test for free.

New Grad Applications

NYU Langone hires new graduate nurses through a general application. Interested applicants should apply to the Spring 2024 Graduate Posting which is expected to be up by late March/ early April. The hospital system encourages interested applicants to contact recruiter Cathy Barach via email after submitting an application. Through the interview process, applicants are able to express areas/units of interest in addition to specific campus requests. New graduates are encouraged to apply before sitting for their NCLEX exam as the entire interview process is able to take place before the exam is taken. The hospital system makes job offers contingent on passing the NCLEX exam.

Student Nurse Externship Program

NYU Langone invites nursing students with at least one clinical semester to apply for their student nurse externship program which allows students to gain more clinical experience while working on one unit in the hospital for the summer. Each of NYU’s five hospitals accepts student externs, with each hospital having a separate application. When applying for the extern program, students should attach their resume with the GPA listed, a cover letter is not required. This is a full time summer program. After applying for this externship program, the hospital system encourages students to contact recruiter Cathy Barach via email. Through the interview process, students are able to express units of interest. The application is open from Monday January 8th through Friday January 19th. Accepted applicants can expect offers by late March.

Alumni Experiences

Two Decker Alumni, Kathyrn Jones (Class of 2022) and Brianna Boccard (Class of 2021) were able to share their experiences transitioning from nursing students, to registered nurses at NYU Langone.

Kathryn has worked on KP 12, an organ transplant unit, since graduating from Binghamton University. In being asked about her transition to becoming an RN, Kathryn acknowledged the intimidating transition while emphasizing the incredible support she received in working both day and night shifts. Open communication was one trait she's highlighted through the support of her coworkers and nurse manager. Even when floating to other units, she felt this trait existed hospital wide. She commends NYU Langone for being receptive to feedback and effectively addressing gaps.

Brianna works on KP 10, a GI, colorectal, general surgery unit. She had the opportunity to work as a student extern on this exact unit the summer prior to her graduation. Brianna describes NYU Langone as a team based environment, she expressed that the hospital system has done an excellent job fostering a supportive culture. She continues to learn and grow in her position and has had the opportunity to train as a charge nurse. After 2 years of experience, Brianna underwent a preceptorship enabling her to take lead as a charge nurse. This role as provided her the opportunity to have increased responsibility and see the gradual well prepared progression between roles in the hospital system.
